Is Home Birth Right for You?

If you have ever wondered whether you could give birth at home, you are not alone, and you are not being reckless for asking. Home birth is a real, regulated option in Texas, and for the right family it can be a deeply safe and peaceful way to welcome a baby.

This guide walks you through what home birth actually involves, who it is a good fit for, and how to decide.

Who attends home births in Texas?

In Texas, home births are typically attended by Licensed Midwives (LMs), who are regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), or by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), who are registered nurses regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing (TDLR).

You can confirm any midwife's license yourself using the TDLR license search. We encourage every family to do this.

Who is a good candidate?

Home birth is generally best suited for healthy, low-risk pregnancies. Your midwife screens for risk at every visit, not just once. Factors we look at include:

  • Your overall health and medical history
  • A single baby, head-down near your due date
  • Blood pressure, blood sugar, and lab results within healthy ranges
  • Your previous birth experiences
  • Your distance from the nearest hospital

If something changes, your midwife will talk with you honestly, and if needed, help you move your care to a hospital team.

Catrice's Take

“Choosing home birth is not choosing to avoid medicine. It is choosing a midwife who knows you, watches closely, and has a plan for every 'what if.'”

What does care look like?

A home birth practice offers full-spectrum care:

  • Prenatal visits with time to actually talk, usually 45 to 60 minutes
  • Labs and screenings, with referrals for ultrasounds when needed
  • Labor and birth in your home, with a trained birth assistant
  • Postpartum visits at home in the days and weeks after birth
  • Newborn checks, feeding support, and help with your recovery

What if we need to transfer?

Every home birth plan includes a transfer plan. Your midwife carries equipment and medications for common situations and is trained to recognize when a hospital is the safer place. Most transfers are not emergencies. They happen calmly, for reasons like a long labor or a mother who wants more pain relief.

What does it cost?

Home birth packages in Texas vary in what they include and what they cost (Home Birth Partners). Ask any midwife exactly what is included. At Baby's Best Start, you can see our tiers on the Investment & Access page, including community-rate options.
